Optimal Cord Clamping & Care of the Placenta

Evidence-based information to help your family make informed decisions about umbilical cord clamping and cutting, and the birth of your placenta.

For many years immediate cord cutting and medical management of the birth of the placenta have been standard practice around the world. And many placentas were disposed of by hospitals without parental consent, or because families were not informed of their choices.

If you would like to make informed decisions when it comes time for your baby to be born, this course is for you!

This quick course will take you through the latest evidence-based information about your choices in relation to the umbilical cord and placenta, in an easy to understand format. Topics include:

  • What is Optimal Cord Clamping?
  • Making an informed decision about if and when to clamp the cord
  • Tikanga for the iho and whenua (Traditional Maori birth practices for the cord and placenta)
  • Making an informed decision about how to birth the placenta
  • How to facilitate a natural birth of the placenta
  • Choices of what to do with the placenta after birth

Throughout the course we follow the journey of three different families as they share about their experiences of cord cutting, the births of their placentas and how they made informed decisions about what to do with the placenta.

We look forward to having you as part of this course!
